JC DogPAC

News Archive - 2004

September 13, 2004: Dog Paddle II was a huge success! We had around 700 dogs attend and raised over $5000 for the dog park! The event was covered in a variety of media outlets:

May 17, 2004: At last night's City Council Work Session, DogPAC received approval from the Council to proceed with plans to develop an off-leash dog park on a portion of the Peninsula parkland. This is a major step forward, and we thank all of you who have helped to make this happen. Now we need to convince The Council to fund the road and start raising money ourselves to build the park. Contact us to help.

May 10, 2004: The Parks & Recreation Commission will discuss possible sites for the dog park at their meeting this Wednesday, May 12th, at 5 p.m. Anne Burnside will be there on behalf of JC DogPAC, but it would be great to have a lot of DogPAC members there, too.

May 10, 2004: The City Council will get a recommendation from Terry Trueblood regarding the dog park at the Monday, May 17th informal Council work session. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. We are not yet sure where we are on the agenda, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out. This is the time to show your support for the park by writing your councilmember, attending the meeting or joining our dog-in by bringing your dog to the meeting.

April 24, 2004: This year, the Dog Paddle will be a 2-day event. You will be able to pre-register through the Parks and Recreation Dept., just like you register for an exercise or swimming class. We will be better organized and the event will run even more smoothly than last year. Barb Meredith, Misha Goodman and Beth Shields have agreed to plan and organize the event and they would like to have lots of help. Please contact Beth Shields at 335-9559 (email beth-shields@uiowa.edu) to offer your ideas and assistance. Registration forms are available in Word and pdf formats.

March 26, 2004: Members of JC DogPAC overwhelmingly voted in favor of focusing on the proposed Peninsula site for an off-leash recreation.

January 25, 2004: On January 21 the Scott Park neighborhood meeting was held. Besides DogPAC and city representatives, there were 6 residents in attendence. Concerns included the impact of our park on other uses, environmental effects of the park, suitability of the parking lot, and park administration.

January 20, 2004: On January 21, there will be a neighborhood meeting regarding the Scott Park site. Terry Trueblood from the city has invited residents in the Scott Park neighborhood to attend the 7pm meeting at Lemme School Media Center. Beth Shields and David Bright will represent and speak on behalf of DogPAC, but all members are welcome to attend the meeting. Misha Goodman will also be there, as a representative of Animal Control. The purpose of these meetings is to provide a forum for neighbors to discuss how building our park would affect them and the neighborhood.
